Welcome to the KUW Insight Podcast. Today’s insight is titled To Err is Human, To Forgive is Divine written by Ade Ojomo and read by Zoe Ekundare:

In 1952, Pa Akindayomi had reproduced a tract printed by the Apostolic Faith for evangelism without permission and out of ignorance. He knew nothing about copyright matters.

After an investigation and interrogation, he was summoned and found guilty. Subsequent action involved the burning of the remaining tracts which angered him as he had used his little resources to print the tracts and felt they should have been used for evangelism.

Sometime prior to his death, he lost consciousness and saw himself in another world walking along a beautiful garden. There he met an old man who ordered him back to earth and he pleaded against the decision. The old man advised him that he must first return and forgive the man responsible for burning the tracts 38 years earlier. He obeyed by writing a letter offering forgiveness and reconciliation to the man who later attended Akindayomi’s burial.

On the cross dying for our sins, Jesus exclaimed that we should be forgiven for we know not what we do. Forgiveness is key to our relationship with God and we are advised in Matthew 18 v 21 – 22 on the limitless application of forgiveness:

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

To forgive someone for hurting is not an easy thing to do but we take joy in the following:

1.    We forgive because Jesus Christ paid a heavy price on the Cross at Calvary.

2.    His death on the Cross provides us with the empowerment and grace to forgive

3.    Forgiving releases us from carrying a heavy burden which we are not designed to carry.
