Welcome to the KUW Insight Podcast. Today’s insight is titled Business Associates? written by Ade Ojomo and read by Morenike Olubode:

1.    Are you in a position of leadership?

2.    What are your greatest challenges?

3.    Does it involve the management of people?

Moses had to lead a mixed multitude of people from Egypt to the Promised Land over a long period in which he faced all kinds of disciplinary issues which could be as a result of the different levels of maturity of the people he was mandated to take out of Egypt to the promised land

This difference in maturity could be explained by a model developed by James F Engel called the Engel’s Scale of Spiritual Conversion. It was developed as a way of understanding the journey an individual takes from no knowledge of God through to the  spiritual maturity as a Christian believer. Along the different steps of the journey, the individual will undergo transformation that affects the way they make decisions – some good and some bad. Hence a greater level of love and patience is required when it comes to exercising discipline.

Jesus commands us to tell everyone about salvation so as a church in this present time; we are faced with a mixed multitude of people with various disciplinary issues. As a result, corrective measure have to therefore take into account the different level of maturity of individuals in their spiritual journey. This process of correction cannot be ignored because not addressing sin can affect other members of the church.

Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 5 v 9 – 13 gives us some insightful advice on how to model our disciplinary process to avoid on one hand disassociating the unbelievers that we are trying to evangelise to a knowledge of Christ and on the other hand adopting corrective measures to address destructive actions:

I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.”

Please note the following when it comes to people and discipline:

1.    Discipline should be carried out in love

2.    Discipline is in place to protect other members of the Church

3.    Guidance should be sought from the Holy Spirit in drafting guidelines and procedures.
